Learning Support

Students at Swanwick Hall Sixth Form are taught by subject experts who have a wealth of experience in A Level teaching. Students are allowed to flourish in the Sixth Form and are provided with opportunities to develop as truly independent learners.

To support this, students at our Sixth Form are also provided with an academic mentoring programme to support them in developing their study skills. The academic mentoring programme uses the A Level Mindset programme alongside a suite of study techniques.

If students require additional support with their learning, they should speak to their tutors our Learning Mentor or the Head of Sixth Form.

Inclusion

Every child is unique in terms of their interests, abilities, motivation and learning needs. At Swanwick Hall Sixth Form we take into account these wide individual characteristics, and we try to ensure that those with exceptional learning needs and/or disabilities are fully included and have access to high quality and appropriate education. We believe that every child should be given the opportunity to achieve their potential in learning. Students with special educational needs (SEN) are fully included in all aspects of school life.

Assessment

When students arrive at Swanwick Hall they are initially tested to give us their base or starting level. This assessment also identifies students who may need extra input or support to access the curriculum.

Students with identified learning difficulties receive extra help which can be:

  • “In-class” support, allowing students to access the curriculum alongside their peers.
  • Individual withdrawal, working on a one-to-one basis.
  • In small groups, for catch-up work in literacy, numeracy skills, social behaviour etc…
  • Progress is continually monitored and appropriate individual development goals are set.

Special Consideration

Students with learning difficulties are tested and some will have help to access their exams. Students may have the opportunity to use the support of a reader and/or scribe or extra time. Those who qualify for special concessions work closely with staff to practise and gain experience to get maximum benefit in their final examinations.

Equity versus Equality

At Swanwick Hall we recognise that people, situations and circumstances often need to be treated individually ensuring that all students are ready to learn, can access the curriculum and can make outstanding progress.

The essence of equity versus equality is highlighted in the picture below.
