Theatre Studies Summary

Drama and Theatre offers a practical and challenging course of study that encourages students to develop an understanding of how the social, cultural and historical contexts of performance texts have influenced the development of drama and theatre. They will experience a range of opportunities to create theatre in a range of collaborative relationships.

The course not only provides a solid foundation for a Drama degree, but many Universities value the study of Drama and Theatre within their Law degree courses. The course requires commitment and focus as students will work in a range of collaborative groups to meet the course requirements.

How you will study

Students will develop and demonstrate theatre making skills with creativity and increasing independence, and also analyse and evaluate their own work and the work of others throughout the course. There will also be a range of opportunities to experience live theatre at different locations.

Component breakdown

Component 1: 20%: Create a piece of theatre based on an extract from a text using the techniques and methods of a practitioner/theatre company. Learners will deconstruct the original play and create a reinterpretation. A creative process log to be submitted

Component 2: 40%: In a group of 2-4, create two pieces of live theatre in response to a stimuli. One would use the techniques and methods of a practitioner, the other would be based on a different style to the original text. Submit a ‘Process and Evaluation’ report

Component 3: 40%: Written examination based on two complete plays and an extract from a third contrasting text.

Students studying Theatre Studies will develop skills that can help lead them into a number of career pathways. This may be a performance based role such as Acting or production based role such as Directing. Students may also find themselves drawn to administration roles connected to the art community or talent agencies.
