English Language Summary

The Extended certificate in Sport aims to provide a coherent introduction into the study of the sport sector, as part of a two-year programme. Students will study units in anatomy and physiology, fitness training and programming for health and wellbeing, professional development in the sport industry and either studying practical sports performance or sports leadership within the optional unit. You will complete assignments which are marked internally and verified by the exam board externally, tasks set and marked by the exam board and a written exam which requires students to draw on essential information to create written answers to practical questions in exam conditions.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Sport 

How you will study

In year 12 you will prepare for a written external exam through teacher led lessons including taught content and practice exam questions 

In year 13 you will complete two units of coursework. This will involve taught content, research, practical, demonstration, videoing and IT skills. 

Component breakdown

Unit 1 – Anatomy and Physiology – Written exam 1 hour 30 minutes, 80 marks in total. 

Unit 2 – Fitness training and programming for health, sport and wellbeing – Task (Students are presented with their scenario in part A and are then allocated 6-8 hours to research the data and prepare notes for the final assessment. During the final assessment, part B, students will be issued more supplementary information and will use this and their research to produce their final plan.) 

Unit 3 – Professional Development in the Sport Industry – assignment based. 

Unit 5 – Application of Fitness Testing – practical and assignment based. 

Students should study this subject if they wish to progress into the field of sport either through Higher Education or a workplace. The BTEC Nationals use a combination of assessment styles to give you the confidence to apply your knowledge to have the study skills to continue at Higher Education and to succeed in the workplace.
