Diploma for Entry to the Uniformed Services Level 3 Summary

The Level 3 Diploma aims to create informed and prepared potential uniformed services recruits. It will enable learners to prepare to make a recruitment application or provide a basis for further study. Students will gain an insight into the practical qualities they require for the Royal Navy, RAF, British Army, Fire & Rescue Service, Police and Prison Service. They will develop key skills including leadership of projects, problem solving, written and verbal communication skills and independent learning; together with an appreciation of appropriate standards of behaviour, dress and interpersonal skills, manners and deportment.  There will be the opportunity to understand and develop the qualities needed to work in the military or civilian services and learn how different roles and departments function.  The programme develops a general understanding of the uniformed service sector and provides an opportunity to investigate a broad range of career opportunities, providing support in preparing for a recruitment interview and an understanding of coaching skills, conflict management, personal protection, navigation and adventurous training.

Entry Requirements

Four GCSE or equivalent grade 3s. Interview with the Programme Leader and a Fitness Assessment with the course Physical Training Instructor.

How you will study

A portfolio of coursework evidence will be accrued during the academic year. Students will complete a total of 12 study units to achieve the Level 3 Diploma, engaging in regular sporting and practical activities within the programme, sometimes supported by uniformed services personnel.  Group discussions, independent research projects and teamwork underpin the units of work with an emphasis on breadth and depth of learning.  Assessments will be based on academic assignments and observation of practical and sporting skills.

Component breakdown

Students will study the following four mandatory units:

UNIT 1: Prepare for a career in a chosen uniformed service

UNIT 2: Develop aspects of physical fitness for entry to the uniformed services

UNIT 3: Develop leadership skills

UNIT 4: Equality, diversity and inclusion

Plus eight additional units, which are likely to be:

UNIT 7: Mental and physical wellbeing

UNIT 8: Carry out map reading and navigation across open country

UNIT 10: Understand conflict management and personal protection

UNIT 15: Sports coaching

UNIT 16: Skills for land-based outdoor and adventurous activities

UNIT 17: Skills for water-based outdoor and adventurous activities

UNIT 19: Understanding discipline in the uniformed services

UNIT 23: Volunteering in the uniformed services
