Music Performance Summary

This course is designed to support progression to higher education when taken as part of a programme of study that includes other appropriate BTEC Nationals or A Levels. The programme gives a broad overview of the sector, with a focus on performance, including musical skills development and professional practice.
The content of this qualification has been developed in consultation with academics to ensure that it supports progression to higher education. Employers and professional bodies have also been involved and consulted to confirm that the content is appropriate and consistent with current practice for learners planning to enter employment directly in the music sector.

Entry Requirements

Students should ideally have studied music and secured grades at Level 2 Merit or a 5 at GCSE. Study of an instrument/voice is vital and weekly instrument lessons must be taken or be something that you are prepared to start. Students will also be required to become Music Ambassadors for Swanwick Hall School.

How you will study

The course is a practical course that includes performance, rehearsal, practice, research and private study. Assessment is through course work and time bound assignments. Written assessment is usually via presentation, presenting publications and other written evidence based work.

Component breakdown

Learners taking this qualification will study three mandatory units:
• Unit 1: Practical Music Theory and Harmony
• Unit 2: Professional Practice in the Music Industry
• Unit 3: Ensemble Music Performance.

Students who study Music Performance will develop skills that will open up opportunities in areas such as performance as Musicians as well as backstage or technical roles such as Sound Technicians or even Composers. Students may also wish to pursue administration based roles in the arts industry.
